The cover on a chair affects comfort every day and decides how the chair looks after a few years. Mesh, woven fabric and PU leather each have clear strengths and weaknesses, and the right choice depends on how warm your room gets, whether you eat at your desk and how much care you are willing to give. This article compares the three on breathability, wear, cleaning and ageing, with one example of each from the chairs in our guides.

Mesh: cool, open and variable in quality

Mesh is a woven or knitted polyester sheet stretched across a frame. Air moves straight through it, which is why mesh is popular for warm rooms and long summer days. A mesh back flexes with you, and a mesh seat does not flatten the way foam can.

The catch is that mesh quality varies. Good mesh holds its tension for years; cheap mesh can loosen and sag, and a poorly shaped frame can press into the backs of the thighs. Mesh backs also need proper lumbar support, because a flat sheet does not hold the lower back on its own. Many chairs use a mesh back with a foam seat as a compromise.

Fabric: soft, warm and long-lasting if rated well

Woven fabric over foam feels soft and familiar, and it does not peel. Fabric is warmer than mesh but usually cooler than PU leather, because it breathes a little. Quality is measured by abrasion tests; a Martindale rating gives the number of rubbing cycles a fabric survives. Steelcase quotes 120,000 cycles for the wool-blend fabric on its Series 1 and Think, a high figure for seating.

The downside is spills. Fabric absorbs liquid, so stains need quick attention. Some gaming chair fabrics are treated to repel fluids, which helps.

PU leather: wipe clean but prone to ageing

PU leather is a polyurethane coating on a fabric backing. It looks like leather, wipes clean with a damp cloth and resists spills, which suits gaming chairs and executive chairs. It is less breathable, so it can feel warm and sticky in a heated room.

Over time PU can crack or flake, especially on edges that rub and in direct sun. Better coatings, such as the EPU leathers used on some premium gaming chairs, are designed to last longer. Genuine leather is a different material again, heavier and more expensive, and needs conditioning.

Which cover suits which room

In a warm loft or south-facing room, mesh is the clear choice. In a cool room, fabric feels more comfortable in winter and lasts well. If you eat or drink at your desk, have pets or want something that wipes clean, PU leather is practical, though it may not age as well. Fabric gaming chairs are a good middle ground for gamers who find PU too warm.

  • Warm room: mesh
  • Cool room, long life: high-rub fabric
  • Spills and pets: PU leather
  • Gaming without PU: fabric gaming chair

Quality signs to look for in a listing

For mesh, look for a named or described mesh (some makers state where it is made or its elasticity), a seat frame with a rounded front edge, and adjustable lumbar to back up the mesh. For fabric, look for a Martindale abrasion figure; anything quoted in the tens of thousands of cycles is aimed at heavy daily use. For PU, look for wording about the coating grade or durability, and avoid chairs where the PU covers high-wear edges with no reinforcement.

Whatever the cover, the frame, gas lift and load rating decide how long the chair lasts overall. A class 4 gas lift, a metal base and a stated warranty of several years are all better signs than marketing words about premium materials.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose a mesh office chair? Mainly for airflow. Mesh lets air through both seat and back, which many people prefer in warm rooms.

Is a gaming chair or mesh chair better? For work in a warm room, a mesh office chair is usually the cooler and more adjustable option. For gaming and lounging, a gaming chair recline may suit you more.

Is a leather chair better than an ergonomic chair? Cover and adjustment are separate things. A leather chair can be ergonomic if it has the right adjustments. Check seat depth, lumbar and arms first.
