Electric standing desks keep track of where their legs are. If that tracking is lost, for example after a power cut, a cable being unplugged or the legs getting out of step, the controller asks for a reset and may refuse to go up until it gets one. A reset makes the desk drive to its lowest position and re-learn it. This guide explains the common routine, when you need it, what to do if it does not work and how it relates to error codes. Follow your desk's manual where it differs.

When a reset is needed

A reset is usually needed when the display shows RST or a similar code, when the desk will only go down, after a power cut or unplugging mid-movement, after replacing a control box, cable or leg, if one leg is higher than the other, or after some error codes. Some controllers also need a reset after you change certain settings.

If the desk shows a different code, look it up first. Our error codes guide covers the common ones, including E01, E04, ASR, RST and LOC.

The common hold-down reset

This routine works on many controllers used by Flexispot, Maidesite, Fezibo and other brands, though the timing varies.

  1. 1

Clear the area under and around the desk, and remove anything that could catch.

  2. 2

Check the desk is plugged in and all cables are pushed fully into the control box.

  3. 3

Press and hold the down button. The desk lowers, sometimes slower than normal.

  4. 4

Keep holding when it reaches the bottom. After roughly 5 to 10 seconds, it usually beeps, moves down a fraction and rises slightly.

  5. 5

Release the button. The display should show the lowest height.

  6. 6

Test by raising and lowering the desk and recalling a preset.

Note:Keep hands, feet, pets and children clear of the desk while it moves, and do not lean on it during a reset.

Other reset methods

Some controllers reset when you press and hold the up and down buttons together for several seconds. Others need a factory reset that clears presets and limits, often by holding a key combination such as M and down, or a specific number key, until the display shows a reset message. A full factory reset is different from the normal hold-down routine: use it only if the manual tells you to, because it wipes your saved heights.

If you no longer have the manual, makers usually publish manuals on their websites, searchable by model. The model number is often on a sticker under the desk or on the control box.

If the reset does not work

Unplug the desk from the wall for a minute or so, plug it back in and try again. Check every cable at the control box and at each leg motor: a loose leg cable is a common cause of failed resets. Make sure nothing is blocking the desk at the bottom, such as a drawer unit, a bin or the chair arms.

If one leg is noticeably lower than the other, the reset usually evens them out. If the desk still will not complete a reset, the control box, a motor or a cable may be faulty. Contact the maker; many frames in our guides carry 5 to 10 years of frame warranty, with separate terms for motors and electronics. Our desk not working guide goes through checks in order.

After the reset

Presets usually survive a normal reset, but test them. If they were cleared, save them again; our presets guide shows how. Also check any upper limit you had set, and re-enable the child lock if you use one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reset a sit-stand desk? Hold the down button until the desk reaches the bottom and keep holding until it beeps and nudges, usually 5 to 10 seconds.

How do I reset a Fezibo standing desk? Many Fezibo controllers use the same hold-down routine. Check the manual for your keypad.

Will a reset delete my presets? A normal reset usually keeps them. A factory reset clears them.

Why does my desk keep asking for a reset? A loose cable, a failing control box or frequent power interruptions are common causes.
