In short
If the chair will not lean back, the tilt lock is probably engaged or the tension is wound too tight. If it will not lock or flops back, the tension is too loose or the lock lever is not engaging. Work through the tilt lock, tension knob, lever and cable, and bolts in that order. If the lever moves freely with no effect, the cable or linkage has likely come off or broken, and the mechanism or lever may need replacing.

When a chair's tilt stops behaving, it usually falls into one of three problems: it will not recline at all, it will not lock in place, or it tips back too easily. Most of these are setting problems rather than broken parts, so check the simple things first. This guide works through the causes in order, for both office task chairs and gaming chairs with a separate recline lever. Mechanisms differ between makers, so keep your manual handy and follow it where it differs from the steps here.
Check the tilt lock
Most task chairs have a lever that locks the back in one or several positions. If it is in the locked position, the chair will not recline however hard you lean. On many chairs, you must take your weight off the backrest (lean forward slightly) for the lock to release or engage, because the mechanism is under load when you lean back.
Lean forward, move the tilt lever to its other position, then lean back. Try each lever under the seat in turn; one may control seat height, one tilt lock and one seat depth or seat angle.
Check the tension knob
The tension knob, usually a large round knob under the front of the seat, sets how hard you must push to recline. Wound fully tight, it can feel as though the tilt does not work for a lighter person. Wound fully loose, the back can flop back with little resistance and feel as if it is broken.
Turn the knob several full turns one way and test, then the other way. It can take many turns to make a noticeable difference. Weight-activated chairs have no knob, so if one of those will not recline, check the lock lever and the points below.
Lever, cable and linkage
On some chairs the tilt lever is on the side of the seat or on an armrest and connects to the mechanism by a cable. On gaming chairs, the recline lever usually sits on the right side and pulls a cable or rod to the backrest hinge.
- 1
Turn the chair on its side and look at the lever where it enters the mechanism.
- 2
Move the lever and watch whether anything moves at the other end.
- 3
If a cable has slipped out of its holder, refit the end into its slot as the manual shows.
- 4
If a plastic lever has snapped inside, a replacement lever may be available from the maker.
- 5
On gaming chairs, check the recline rod is still attached to both hinges.
- 6
Tighten bolts holding the mechanism to the seat; a loose mechanism can stop the lock from engaging.
Note:Do not open the tilt mechanism housing. It contains strong springs under tension that can cause injury if released.
Worn or broken mechanism
If the lock and tension are set correctly, the lever works and the chair still will not tilt or lock, the mechanism itself may be worn. Signs include clicking or grinding inside, a back that drops suddenly, or a lock that slips under load. Mechanisms are often replaceable as a unit, held by four bolts to the seat and pressed onto the gas lift.
Before buying parts, check your warranty. ProtoArc, Songmics and Melokea list five-year warranties on chairs in our guides; Steelcase lists twelve years on Series 1. A mechanism failure within that period should be a warranty claim, not a home repair.
Gaming chair recline not working
Gaming chairs use a separate recline mechanism at the backrest hinges. If the back will not move, check the lever releases the hinge lock: pull the lever and push back firmly, since some need weight to move. If the back will not lock, the hinge teeth or spring may be worn, or the rod connecting both sides has come loose so only one side locks. Tighten the hinge bolts and check both sides move together. If a hinge is cracked, stop using the recline and contact the maker. See our gaming chairs guide if it is time for a replacement.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't my office chair lean back? The tilt lock is engaged or the tension is wound very tight. Lean forward, release the lock and loosen the knob.
Why won't my chair tilt lock work? Take your weight off the back before moving the lever. If it still slips, the lock may be worn.
Why does my chair tip back too easily? The tension is too loose. Turn the knob towards firmer, which can take many turns.
Can I replace a tilt mechanism? Often yes, as a whole unit. Match the bolt pattern and the gas lift taper, or buy the maker's part.
