Every standing desk lists a maximum load, but it is not always clear what that number includes. This explainer covers what load ratings mean, how to estimate the weight of your own setup, why the desktop often uses a big share of the rating, and how motors and leg design affect capacity. It also answers the related question of how much standing desks themselves weigh.

What the load rating means

The load rating, sometimes called lifting capacity or dynamic load, is the weight the motors can lift smoothly. It usually includes the desktop. A frame may also list a higher static load, which it can hold without moving. Use the lifting figure when planning.

Ratings assume the weight is spread across the desk. A heavy PC hung at one end loads one leg more than the other. Two figures from our guides: the MAIDeSITe dual motor frame lists 125 kg, and a Flexispot dual motor three-stage frame lists 100 kg.

Typical ratings by frame type

These ranges are typical across current frames. Check your frame's listing.

Adding up your setup

Weigh what you can, or use the figures in product listings. Typical weights are below, but they vary widely.

Why leave a margin

A desk near its limit moves more slowly, can strain the motors and may trigger overload errors. Many people keep their total at no more than about 70 to 80 percent of the rating, which leaves room for adding a monitor later. A frame used near its limit may also wobble more at height.

If you see an overload or similar code, our error codes guide explains the common ones.

Leaning and sitting on the desk

Load ratings are not for people. Do not sit or stand on a standing desk, and avoid leaning heavily on it at full height. Downward force at one corner can bend legs or damage the gearing.

Note:Never sit or stand on a standing desk. Keep children off it and use the child lock if the handset has one.

How much do standing desks weigh?

Frames alone usually weigh about 20 to 40 kg, with dual motor and three-stage frames at the heavier end. Add the top for the total. A complete 160 cm desk can weigh 45 kg or more, so plan for two people when building or moving it. Our moving guide covers the steps.

Monitor arms and load

Monitor arms clamp to the edge of the desk and put their weight and the screen's weight at one point near the back. That is within what most frames can handle, but on a long desk with three arms the load is no longer spread evenly. Fix arms close to the legs where possible, rather than in the middle of a wide top, to limit sag and keep the load near the lifting columns.

Check the desktop can take a clamp. Thin or hollow-core tops can crack under arm clamps, so use a reinforcing plate if the arm maker supplies one.

Choosing a desk for a heavy setup

For three monitors, a PC on the desk or a solid wood top, look for dual motors, three-stage legs and a lifting rating of 100 kg or more. Our electric standing desks guide and standing desk frames guide list ratings from each listing.

Frequently asked questions

Does the weight limit include the desktop? Usually yes. Check the listing; most lifting ratings include the top.

How much weight can a single motor desk hold? Typically about 50 to 80 kg including the top. Check the exact figure.

Can I put a PC on a standing desk? Yes, if the total stays within the rating. An under-desk PC mount keeps it moving with the desk.

What happens if I overload a standing desk? It may move slowly, stop, show an error or wear the motors faster.
